Throughout history, events have taken place where people have not been able to explain the reason for them; such as how certain amphibians can survive being encased in pockets of coal or stone geodes or why multi-coloured lights have been reported to appear before eathquakes. To the cultures of the ancient world, myths and legends could explain things that they themselves couldn't. For example, earthquakes; earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates, however, the Greeks, for example, believed that they were caused by Poseidon (the Earthshaker) who would often work on behalf of another god such as Zeus who may have been angry or Hera who may have been jealous.
