Quaestorship
76 BC
Advantages of Quaestor
The Questor was the 'first-step on the political ladder' so it allowed Cicero to become a member of the Senate. His Quaestorship of Sicily would give Cicero the opportunity to demonstrate his incorruptability and also provided him with sacro-sanctity as it was an official post.
Significance of Quaestorship
Cicero's honest behaviour would help to develop his reputation from being just a good speaker to being a good, fair man. As he did not take commission from sales (as was the custom), he developed a good relationship with the equitorial class of Sicily. This meant that he gained political support from them as they had previously had no representation. His honest behaviour would have been remarkable as it was almost expected that a Quaestor in Sicily would take commission from the Sicilians as it would be a great way to make money to be used in future electoral campaigns.
What was learnt in Sicily?
Cicero learnt that it was not the ears but the eyes of the Roman people that were important as he was shocked to find out that news of his character had not reached the plebs in Rome. So, he decided to make it his business to be seen in Rome and to make his name in the forum.
