The Thirty Tyrants
Rule of The Thirty Tyrants
Following the defeat of Athens in 404 BC, the Spartans appointed thirty anti-democratic aristocrats to rule; they brutally suppressed their opposition and stole desirable properties from the Athenian citizens. Following a great series of street battles in 403 BC, a pro-democratic resistance movement came to power. They declared the first recorded amnesty in history for the acts of The Thirty Tyrants.
