Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia is considered to be the 'cradle of civilisation' in the West; it helped to lay the foundations to government, language, science, religion, etc. to civilisations in the West. Mesopotamia was formed of three key settlements, Assyria, Babylonia and Sumer.
