The Sculptors
The best sculptors became international celebrities. Pheidias (c. 490 BC - 425 BC) was one example. He created a 40-ft golden and ivory statue to Athena that was placed in the Parthenon and its thought that he oversaw he work on the Parthenon frieze. On account of his work in Athens, he was commissioned to construct the statue of Zeus at Olympia too.
Private Sculptural Commissions
It was illegal for a citizen to make a private commission of a statue in Athens, however, it was legal if it was placed in a temple or in public view as an offering to the gods.
New Style
A new style of sculpture was introduced that made it appear as though the statue was in the act of movement. Male statues had bent arms and/or bent legs and their musculature was correct rather than sketchy, like it had been previously. Female statues were also in more relaxed stances and their clothing hinted at the body beneath. The faces on the statues were now an image of an 'impressive calm'.
