ROLE: Goddess of Love
Goddess of Beauty
SYMBOL: Dove, Sparrow, Swan, Myrtle
PARENTS: Zeus and Dione
Venus was a minor Italian nature goddess who was associated with spring but became far more notorious after Julius Caesar's claim to the Julian family's divine ancestry from Venus; he built the Venus Genetrix in 46 BC. According to Homer, Venus was the mother of the Trojan prince, Aeneas. Virgil transformed fragmentary Roman legends to write the Aeneid in which Aeneas founded Lavinium, the precursor to Rome. The Julio-Claudian emperors claimed descent through Aeneas so Venus was linked with the imperial dynasty of Rome. In 135 AD, Hadrian even dedicated a joint-temple to Venus and Roma Dea. Doves and the morning star (the planet Venus) were sacred to Venus.
