Diana was the patron goddess of wild beasts and the harvest moon as a goddess of fertility. In her great temple at Ephesus (Asia Minor), she is depicted as being many-breasted. In Rome, a temple on the Aventine Hill was founded in the sixth-century BC where she was worshipped as a goddess of childbirth.
Diana had a temple on the shores of Lake Nemi (north of Rome) where the priest was an escaped slave; to become priest, a slave had to kill the current priest in a single combat. After this, the priest had to patrol the lake's shores to be wary of potential successors.
