ROLE: Queen of the Gods
Juno was the name of something that all women had watching over them in Roman culture
SYMBOL: Peacock, Cow
PARENTS: Cronus and Rhea
As the supreme goddess of Rome, Juno had an ancient origin, with a temple as early as 735 BC on the Esquiline Hill. Her sacred geese on the Capitol Hill warned the Romans of a Gallic attack during their sack of Rome in 390 BC so she became Juno Lucetia, a goddess of light and a moon goddess.
Juno portrayed all the virtues of a Roman woman which had great respect in the Republic, so much so that the month of June is named after her. As Juno Lucina she was goddess of fertility and childbirth, and it was she who the Sabine women who had been abducted by Romulus prayed to. This is further supported by her role as Juno Pronuba to preside over marriage.
